The Rejection of the Manifestations of God in
Every Age
"A prophet is not without honour, save in his own
country, and in his own house." (Matthew
13:57)
"In the Book of Iqan we can read the
Word of God concerning the true reincarnation, which is the Return of the
Spiritual Qualities in the Servants of God. In the Gospel it is written that
they asked John the Baptist if he was Elijah and that he answered
plainly, 'I am not.' (John 1:21) Elijah
appeared long before Jesus.
When the Christ came, He was veiled "in a cloud" from the eyes of the Jews. A voice came out of the cloud saying, 'This is my Beloved Son.' (Matt. 3:17)
Clouds and darkness gradually obscure all the former Manifestations. Although they are promised and expected, they are refused during their earthly life on account of the spiritual blindness of the people. Elijah came but was not recognized in John. (Matt. 11;14)
It was not the person or entity of Elijah but his perfection and qualities which John embodied. The flowers of last year will come again this year. We can say they have returned, not the actual substance of the former flowers, but their color, perfume, and perfection have returned.

Some are awaiting the coming of Christ in the
clouds of heaven. He has already come in the heart, if you believe, while those
who do not believe in the Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh cannot see Him on account
of clouds and veils. Many people are going out of the churches dissatisfied
with religious teaching. It is because they do not see spiritually." (Abdu'l-Baha,
quoted in Ten Days in the Light of Akka)
Men have, at all times, considered every World Reformer a fomenter
of discord, and have referred unto Him in terms with which all are familiar.
Each time the Daystar of Divine Revelation shed its radiance from the horizon
of God's Will a great number of men denied Him, others turned aside from Him,
and still others calumniated Him, and thereby withheld the servants of God from
the river of loving providence of Him Who is the King of creation. In
like manner, they who, in this day, have neither met this Wronged One nor
associated with Him have said, and even now continue to say, the things thou
hast heard and hearest still. Say: "O
people! The Sun of Utterance beameth forth in this day, above the horizon of
bounty, and the radiance of the Revelation of Him Who spoke on Sinai flasheth
and glisteneth before all religions. Purge and sanctify your breasts, and your
hearts, and your ears, and your eyes with the living waters of the utterance of
the All-Merciful, and set, then, your faces towards Him. By the righteousness
of God! Ye shall hear all things proclaim: 'Verily,
He the True One is come. Blessed are they that judge with fairness, and blessed
they that turn towards Him!'" (Baha'u'llah, Epistle to the Son of
the Wolf, p. 64)
"Wert thou, for the sake of
God, to ponder, though it be but for an hour, upon the things which have
occurred in former times and more recently, thou wouldst turn away from the
things thou dost possess unto the things which belong unto God, and wouldst
become a means for the exaltation of His Word. Hath, from the foundation of the
world until the present day, any Light or Revelation shone forth from the
dayspring of the will of God which the kindreds of the earth have accepted, and
Whose Cause they have acknowledged? Where is it to be found, and what is its
name? Since the Seal of the Prophets (Muhammad) -- may
all else but Him be His sacrifice -- and before Him the Spirit of God (Jesus),
as far back as the First Manifestation,
all have at the time of Their appearance suffered grievously. Some were held to
be possessed, others were called impostors, and were treated in a manner that
the pen is ashamed to describe. By God! There befell Them what hath made all
created things to sigh, and yet the people are, for the most part, sunk in
manifest ignorance! We pray God to assist them to return unto Him, and to
repent before the door of His mercy. Potent is He over all things. (Baha'u'llah,
Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 92)
"As
oft as an Apostle cometh unto you with that which your souls desire not, ye
swell with pride, accusing some of being impostors and slaying others." [Qur'án
2:87.] "Not
one single Manifestation of Holiness hath appeared but He was afflicted by the
denials, the repudiation, and the vehement opposition of the people around
Him... And how fierce that torment, if the divines of the age be its chief instigators, if
they denounce Him to their followers, cast Him out from their midst, and
declare Him a miscreant! Hath not the same befallen this Servant, and been
witnessed by all?" (Baha'u'llah, The
Kitab-i-Iqan, #4 & 114)
"How
great, how very great is the Cause; how very fierce the
onslaught of all the peoples and kindreds of the earth! Erelong shall the clamor of the multitude throughout
Africa, throughout America, the cry of the European and of the Turk, the
groaning of India and China be heard from far and near. One and all they shall
arise with all their power to resist His Cause. Then shall the Knights of the
Lord, assisted by grace from on high, strengthened by faith, aided by the power
of understanding and reinforced by the legions of the Covenant, arise and make
manifest the truth of the verse: 'Behold
the confusion that hath befallen the tribes of the defeated!' [Qur'án 38:
11] ('Abdu'l-Baha, quoted in The Compilation of Compilations vol II, p. 212)
"If tribulation touch thee for
My sake, call thou to mind My ills and troubles, and remember My banishment and
imprisonment. Thus do We devolve on thee what hath descended upon Us from Him
Who is the All-Glorious, the All-Wise.
By My Self! The day is approaching when We will have rolled up the world and all that is therein, and spread out a new order in its stead. He, verily, is powerful over all things." (Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, CXLIII)
By My Self! The day is approaching when We will have rolled up the world and all that is therein, and spread out a new order in its stead. He, verily, is powerful over all things." (Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, CXLIII)
"By Thy glory! Were all the peoples of the earth to join together
to harm a single one of the people of Bahá, they would find themselves powerless, for all that they see as
harming Thy chosen ones is as light unto them and as fire unto Thine
enemies." (Bahá’u’lláh, Days of Remembrance, #8:3)
When Abraham was sent forth, however much He
expounded the truth, established the religion of God, disseminated new
teachings, and explained the divine mysteries, the Assyrians and the Chaldeans
would say, “This is but an idle fancy and an empty tale, a mere figment of the
imagination. It will never come to pass.” Even more, they called it sheer
ignorance and counted themselves among the exponents of reason and
understanding. But before long it became clear that what Abraham had proclaimed
was indeed the truth, and that it was their own thoughts that were the idle
fancies. For after a short time the teachings of Abraham were realized in the
world: The Holy Land was given to His descendants; the foundations of the
religion of God were established; Isaac and
Jacob came into the world; Joseph became ruler in Egypt; Ishmael was blessed and illumined Mount
Paran; Moses the Interlocutor
appeared, beheld in the desert of Sinai the blazing fire of God in the Burning
Bush, rescued the Israelites from their oppression and captivity at the hands
of the Egyptians, led them to the Holy Land, and, through His teachings and His
religion, which were consonant with the needs of the age, founded a mighty
nation. Thus did the deniers fully experience their error, yet they were not
chastened or admonished.
On the
contrary, when Moses appeared they erred anew, for Pharaoh’s people regarded
the teachings and the law of Moses as mere fancy and accorded them no
importance, considering their own ideas to represent the truth. But after a
short time it became clear and evident that what Moses had proclaimed was
indeed the truth and had come to pass, that the religion of God had been put
into full effect and had secured the honour and advancement of all Israel, and
that it was the thoughts and imaginations of the Egyptians that were the idle
fancies. This was the second experience and yet the people were still not
admonished and awakened, but rather persisted in their ignorance until Jesus appeared with a beauteous
countenance and an eloquent tongue, and spread abroad the sweet savors of the
rose-garden of divine mysteries and imparted the grace of the Holy Spirit.
The
people, notwithstanding their two previous experiences wherein their error had
been established, claimed again that the teachings of the glorious Gospel were
idle fancies—that they were mere thoughts and imaginations, that they were
devoid of all reality, and that they lacked in philosophical substance. “These
are but vain and idle thoughts,” they would say, “whereas we possess true knowledge
and lofty ideas, we have wisdom and discernment, and we know the ways of sound
governance.” But before long their error was exposed, for what Jesus had said
was sound and true: It was heavenly thoughts and divine teachings, whereas the
prevailing thoughts of the tribes and nations of the earth were the vain and
idle fancies. This was the third error and yet another experience which was
later also repeated upon the appearance of Muḥammad and the Báb.
Now Bahá’u’lláh has appeared, the divine
teachings and admonitions have been unveiled, the call of the oneness of
humanity has been sounded, the banner of the kingdom of peace is flying, and
the tabernacle of love and harmony amongst all mankind has been raised in the very
heart of the world and is summoning all people. And yet again some ignorant
souls imagine that these divine teachings are without foundation and regard
their own imaginations as lofty thoughts. But before long it will become
manifest that what He has proclaimed is sound, proven, and compelling, and that
all other thoughts are vain and idle. ~'Abdu'l-Baha
From time immemorial the clay clods of
the world have, wholly by reason of their love of leadership, perpetrated such
acts as have caused men to err. (Baha'u'llah,
Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 86)
Know ye that
trials and tribulations have, from time immemorial, been the lot of the chosen
Ones of God and His beloved, and such of His servants as are detached from all
else but Him, they whom neither merchandise nor traffic beguile from the
remembrance of the Almighty, they that speak not till He hath spoken, and act
according to His commandment.(Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah,
LXVI)
Witness
how every time the Day Star of Divine bounty hath shed the light of His
Revelation upon the world, the people of His Day have arisen against Him, and
repudiated His truth. They who were regarded as the leaders of men have
invariably striven to hinder their followers from turning unto Him Who is the
Ocean of God's limitless bounty…At no time, in no
Dispensation, have the Prophets of God escaped the blasphemy of their enemies,
the cruelty of their oppressors, the denunciation of the learned of their age,
who appeared in the guise of uprightness and piety. Day and night they
passed through such agonies as none can ever measure, except the knowledge of
the one true God, exalted be His glory.Consider this wronged One. Though the
clearest proofs attest the truth of His Cause; though the prophecies He, in an
unmistakable language, hath made have been fulfilled; though, in spite of His
not being accounted among the learned, His being unschooled and inexperienced
in the disputations current among the divines, He hath rained upon men the
showers of His manifold and Divinely-inspired knowledge; yet, behold how this
generation hath rejected His authority, and rebelled against Him! He hath,
during the greater part of His life, been sore-tried in the clutches of His
enemies. His sufferings have now reached their culmination in this afflictive
Prison, into which His oppressors have so unjustly thrown Him.(Gleanings
from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, XXIII)
"..the
ecclesiastical leaders of Christendom, ...heedless of the voice of Bahá'u'lláh,
have interposed themselves between the Christ returned in 'the glory of the
Father' and their respective congregations. (Shoghi Effendi, God
Passes By, p. 229)
"The leaders of men," He has likewise
asserted, "have,
from time immemorial, prevented the people from turning unto the Most Great
Ocean. The Friend of God [Abraham] was
cast into fire through the sentence pronounced by the divines of the age, and
lies and calumnies were imputed to Him Who discoursed with God [Moses]. Reflect upon the One Who was the Spirit of God
[Jesus]. Though He showed forth the utmost
compassion and tenderness, yet they rose up against that Essence of Being and
Lord of the seen and unseen, in such a manner that He could find no refuge
wherein to rest. Each day He wandered unto a new place, and sought a new
shelter. Consider the Seal of the Prophets [Muhammad]
-- may the souls of all else except Him be His sacrifice! How grievous the
things which befell that Lord of all being at the hands of the priests of
idolatry, and of the Jewish doctors, after He had uttered the blessed words
proclaiming the unity of God! By My life! My pen groaneth, and all
created things cry out by reason of the things that have touched Him, at the
hands of such as have broken the Covenant of God and His Testament, and denied
His Testimony, and gainsaid His signs." (Baha'u'llah, quoted in The
Promised Day is Come, p. 80)
Not one single Manifestation of Holiness hath appeared but He was
afflicted by the denials, the repudiation, and the vehement opposition of the
people around Him. Thus it
hath been revealed: “O the misery of men! No Messenger cometh unto them but
they laugh Him to scorn.” [Qur'án 36:30] Again He saith: “Each nation hath plotted darkly against their
Messenger to lay violent hold on Him, and disputed with vain words to
invalidate the truth.” [Qur'án 40:5](Baha'u'llah, The Kitab-i-Iqan, #4)
“Keep far from a
false charge, and do not kill the innocent and righteous, for I will not acquit
the wicked.” Exodus 23:7
O OPPRESSORS ON
EARTH! Withdraw your hands from tyranny, for I have pledged Myself not to
forgive any man's injustice. This is My covenant which I have irrevocably
decreed in the preserved tablet and sealed with My seal. (Baha'u'llah, The Persian Hidden Words #64)
"This is
the Day on which the Bird of Utterance hath warbled its melody upon the
branches, in the name of its Lord, the God of Mercy. Blessed is the man that
hath, on the wings of longing, soared towards God, the Lord of the Judgment
Day.
The one true
God well knoweth, and all the company of His trusted ones testify, that this
Wronged One hath, at all times, been faced with dire peril. But for the
tribulations that have touched Me in the path of God, life would have held no
sweetness for Me, and My existence would have profited Me nothing." (Baha'u'llah, Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 94)
O friends!
The wine of eternal life is flowing. O lovers! The face of the Beloved is
unveiled and unconcealed. O companions! The fire of the Sinai of love is
burning bright and resplendent. Cast off the burden of love for this world and
every attachment thereto, and, even as luminous, heavenly birds, soar in the
atmosphere of the celestial Paradise and wing your flight to the everlasting
nest. For devoid of this, life itself hath no worth, and bereft of the Beloved,
the heart is of no account. (Baha'u'llah, Lawḥ-i-Ghulámu’l-Khuld (Tablet of the Immortal Youth) #27:39
Days of Remembrance)
Their
chief concern is mere opposition; their sole desire is to ignore the truth.
Unto every discerning observer it is evident and manifest that had these people
in the days of each of the Manifestations of the Sun of Truth sanctified their
eyes, their ears, and their hearts from whatever they had seen, heard, and
felt, they surely would not have been deprived of beholding the beauty of God,
nor strayed far from the habitations of glory. But having weighed the testimony
of God by the standard of their own knowledge, gleaned from the teachings of
the leaders of their faith, and found it at variance with their limited
understanding, they arose to perpetrate such unseemly acts. Leaders of religion, in every age, have hindered their people
from attaining the shores of eternal salvation, inasmuch as they held the reins
of authority in their mighty grasp. Some for the lust of leadership,
others through want of knowledge and understanding, have been the cause of the
deprivation of the people. By their sanction and authority, every Prophet of
God hath drunk from the chalice of sacrifice, and winged His flight unto the
heights of glory. What unspeakable cruelties they that
have occupied the seats of authority and learning have inflicted upon the true
Monarchs of the world, those Gems of divine virtue! Content with a
transitory dominion, they have deprived themselves of an everlasting
sovereignty. Thus, their eyes beheld not the light of the countenance of the
Well-Beloved, nor did their ears hearken unto the sweet melodies of the Bird of
Desire. For this reason, in all sacred books mention hath been made of the
divines of every age.
Thus
He saith: “O people of the Book! Why
disbelieve the signs of God to which ye yourselves have been witnesses?” [Qur'án
3:70] And also He saith: “O people of the Book! Why clothe ye the
truth with falsehood? Why wittingly hide the truth?” [Qur'án 3:71] Again, He saith: “Say, O people of the Book! Why repel believers from the way of God?” [Qur'án
3:99]
It
is evident that by the “people of the
Book,” who have repelled their fellow-men from the straight path of God, is
meant none other than the divines of that age, whose names and character have
been revealed in the sacred books, and alluded to in the verses and traditions
recorded therein, were you to observe with the eye of God. (Baha'u'llah,
The Kitab-i-Iqan, #15)
This
sovereignty must needs be revealed and established either in the lifetime of
every Manifestation of God or after His ascension unto His true habitation in
the realms above. What thou dost witness today is but a confirmation of this
truth. That spiritual ascendency, however, which is primarily intended,
resideth within, and revolveth around Them from eternity even unto eternity. It
can never for a moment be divorced from Them. Its dominion hath encompassed all
that is in heaven and on earth. (Baha'u'llah, The Kitab-i-Iqan,
#117)
What
could have caused such contention and conflict? Why
is it that the advent of every true Manifestation of God hath been accompanied
by such strife and tumult, by such tyranny and upheaval? This
notwithstanding the fact that all the Prophets of God, whenever made manifest
unto the peoples of the world, have invariably foretold the coming of yet
another Prophet after them, and have established such signs as would herald the
advent of the future Dispensation. To this the records of all sacred books bear
witness. Why then is it that despite the expectation
of men in their quest of the Manifestations of Holiness, and in spite of the
signs recorded in the sacred books, such acts of violence, of oppression and
cruelty, should have been perpetrated in every age and cycle against all the
Prophets and chosen Ones of God? Even
as He hath revealed: “As oft as an
Apostle cometh unto you with that which your souls desire not, ye swell with
pride, accusing some of being impostors and slaying others.”
[Qur'án 2:87.](Baha'u'llah, The Kitab-i-Iqan, #13)
“The chief cause is the misrepresentation of religion by
the religious leaders and teachers. They teach their followers to believe that their own
form of religion is the only one pleasing to God, and that followers of any
other persuasion are condemned by the All- Loving Father and deprived of His
Mercy and Grace. Hence arise among the peoples, disapproval, contempt, disputes
and hatred. If these religious prejudices could be swept away, the nations
would soon enjoy peace and concord.”
(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, Paris Talks)
There are five
hundred million people who call themselves Christians. If you compare their
deeds with the text of the Gospels, you will find no likeness thereto. The real
Christians are rare. The Christ exhorted men to be kind. The Christians are fighting
and killing one another, leading their young men into war, shedding blood,
destroying dwellings, causing mothers to lose their sons and children their
fathers. What has all this to do with the teachings of Christ? Is a man whose highest aim is bloodshed a Christian? Christ suffered in order to teach kindness. "O Father, forgive them, for they know
not what they do." Thus he pardoned his murderers. How merciful he
was! The advanced men of all time have ever been persecuted and continually in
adversity. He who discovered the movement of the earth and the relative immobility
of the sun terminated his days in prison, because his teachings did not
please the priests. One who is wise in the ways of God sees that his words and
deeds reflect the glory of God. I hope that the light of this glory
may shine forth from each one of you, for this is the decisive proof - for this
Bahá’u’lláh suffered - that he might educate men to become the
educators of the world and spread truth abroad. (Abdu'l-Baha,
Divine Philosophy, p. 42)
"It seems
both strange and pitiful that the Church and clergy should always, in every
age, be the most bitter opponents of the very Truth they are continually
admonishing their followers to be prepared to receive! They have become so violently attached to the form that the
substance itself eludes them! However, such denunciations as those your minister
made publicly against you and the Bahá'í Faith can do no harm to the Cause at
all; on the contrary they only serve to spread its name abroad and mark it as
an independent religion." (From
a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi to an individual believer,
February 7, 1945, Lights of Guidance, p. 419)
"In these
days, however, such odours of jealousy are diffused, that -- I swear by the Educator of all beings, visible and invisible -- from
the beginning of the foundation of the world -- though it hath no beginning --
until the present day, such malice, envy, and hate have in no wise appeared,
nor will they ever be witnessed in the future."(Baha'u'llah,
The Kitab-i-Iqan, #277)
"The Bahá'ís know that the tide will turn and come
in, after mankind has suffered, with mighty waves of faith and devotion. The
people will enter the Cause of God in troops, and the whole condition will
change. The Bahá'ís see this new condition which will take place, as one on the
mountain-top sees the first glimpse of the dawn, before others are aware of it;
and it is toward that that the Bahá'ís must work. The Guardian will pray that
you may be instrumental in bringing many of your fellow-youth into the Faith.
He sends you his loving greetings." (signed
by R. Rabbani, October 5, 1953, Japan Will Turn Ablaze, p. 102)
"There is nothing greater or more blessed than the
Love of God! It gives
healing to the sick, balm to the wounded, joy and consolation to the whole world,
and through it alone can man attain Life Everlasting. The essence of all
religions is the Love of God, and it is the foundation of all the sacred
teachings." (Abdu'l-Baha,
Paris Talks, p. 77)
"There is nothing so heart-breaking and terrible as an
outburst of human savagery! I charge you all that each one of you concentrate
all the thoughts of your heart on love and unity. When a thought of war comes,
oppose it by a stronger thought of peace. A thought of hatred must be destroyed
by a more powerful thought of love. Thoughts of war bring destruction to all
harmony, well-being, restfulness and content. Thoughts of love are constructive
of brotherhood, peace, friendship, and happiness."
(Abdu'l-Baha, Paris Talks, p. 28)
At no time did We send an Apostle, a Prophet, or a Vicegerent whom
these wicked souls did not oppose, even as ye witness how these workers of
iniquity are raising objections in this day. Nor have the people ever rejected
the truth except after their divines rejected it, and swelled with pride before
God, and sought to dispute His verses. Thus did the rejection of the leaders give rise to the
rejection of those who followed them in their selfish desires. None among these
divines ever bore allegiance unto the new Revelation, save for those who could
gaze with the eye of holiness, whose hearts God had tested and proved true for
His recognition, to whom He hath given to drink from that chalice of holiness
sealed with the musk of the spirit, and who were intoxicated by the wine of
certitude which they had quaffed from that chalice. These, verily, are they
whom the angels of Paradise will glorify in the garden of eternity and who will
delight at every moment in a joy and gladness born of God. No Prophet have We ever raised up
except that He was repudiated by the divines whilst they prided themselves in
their learning, even as they do in this day. Say: O concourse of divines! Do ye worship the Calf and abandon
the One Who hath created you and taught you that which ye knew not? O people of
the earth! Ponder the state of these workers of iniquity, what they have
wrought in the past, and what they pursue in this day. Say: If He Who hath come unto you
with clear verses be not the True One from God, even as ye proclaim this day
from your seats of worldly honour, then by what proof can ye establish the
truth of Muḥammad,
Whom we sent aforetime? Be fair in your judgement, O concourse of ill-wishers! (Baha'u'llah, Suriy-i-Nush, Days of Remembrance, #35:9-12)
MANIFESTATIONS OF GOD
"It cannot
be said there was a time when man was not. All that we can say is that this
terrestrial globe at one time did not exist, and at its beginning man did not
appear upon it. But from the beginning which has no beginning, to the end which
has no end, a Perfect Manifestation always exists. This Man of Whom we speak is
not every man; we mean the Perfect Man. For the noblest part of the tree is the
fruit, which is the reason of its existence. If the tree had no fruit, it would
have no meaning." (Abdu'l-Baha, Some Answered Questions, p. 196)
"If
ye seek God, it behooveth you to seek Him
Whom God shall make manifest [Bahá’u’lláh], and if ye cherish the desire to dwell in
the Ark of Names, ye will be distinguished as the guides to Him Whom God shall
make manifest, did ye but believe in Him. Verily then make your hearts the
daysprings of His exalted Names as recorded in the Book, and ye shall, even as
mirrors placed before the sun, be able to receive enlightenment." ~The Báb.
"O
concourse of the earth! By God! I am the true Faith of
God amongst you. Beware that ye deny Me not. God hath manifested Me with
a light that hath encompassed all that are in the heavens and all that are on
earth. Judge ye equitably, O people, My manifestation, and the revelation of My
glory, and the radiance of My light, and be not of them that act
unjustly." (Baha'u'llah, Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p.
96)
The Faith of God hath in this day
been made manifest. He Who is the Lord of the world is come and hath shown the
way. His faith is the faith of benevolence and His religion is the religion of
forbearance. This faith bestoweth eternal life and this religion enableth
mankind to dispense with all else. It verily embraceth all faiths and all
religions. Take hold thereof and guard it well. (Baha'u'llah, Tabernacle of Unity)
"God
beareth Me witness that My purpose hath not been to foment sedition, but to
purify His servants from whatsoever hath prevented them from drawing nigh unto
Him, the Lord of the Day of Reckoning. I was asleep upon My couch, when lo, the
breezes of My Lord, the All-Merciful, passed over Me, awoke Me from My slumber,
and bade Me lift up My voice betwixt earth and heaven. This
thing is not from Me, but from God." (Baha'u'llah,
Suriy-i-Haykal, SLH #1:258)
"Naught in the heavens
or on the earth can escape His knowledge, and He, verily, perceiveth all
things." [Qur'án
10:61; 34:3] (Baha'u'llah, Gems of Divine Mysteries, p. 78)
Say: This is the sealed and
mystic Scroll, the repository of God's irrevocable Decree, bearing the words
which the Finger of Holiness hath traced, that lay wrapt within the veil of
impenetrable mystery, and hath now been sent down as a token of the grace of
Him Who is the Almighty, the Ancient of Days. In it have We decreed the
destinies of all the dwellers of the earth and the denizens of heaven, and
written down the knowledge of all things from first to last. Nothing whatsoever can escape or frustrate Him, whether
created in the past or to be created in the future, could ye but perceive it. (Baha'u'llah, GWB, CXXIX)
Nothing escapeth His knowledge. (Baha'u'llah, Epistle to the Son of the
Wolf, p. 149)
Nothing, in truth, escapeth His
knowledge; He, verily, is the Incomparable, the All-Informed. (Baha'u'llah, Epistle to the Son of the
Wolf, p. 82)
Nothing whatsoever can
escape His knowledge. He heareth and seeth, and He, in truth, is the
All-Hearing, the All-Seeing. How very strange that they discern not between the
trustworthy and the treacherous. (Baha'u'llah,
ESW, p. 107)
Contemplate with thine
inward eye the chain of successive Revelations that hath linked the
Manifestation of Adam with that of the Báb. I testify before God that each one
of these Manifestations hath been sent down through the operation of the Divine
Will and Purpose, that each hath been the bearer of a specific Message, that
each hath been entrusted with a divinely-revealed Book and been commissioned to
unravel the mysteries of a mighty Tablet.(Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, XXXI)
"God witnesseth that
there is no God but Him, the Gracious, the Best-Beloved. All grace and bounty
are His. To whomsoever He will He giveth whatsoever is His wish. He, verily, is
the All-Powerful, the Almighty, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting. We,
verily, believe in Him Who, in the person of the Báb, hath been sent down by
the Will of the one true God, the King of Kings, the All-Praised. We, moreover,
swear fealty to the One Who, in the time of Mustaghath,
is destined to be made manifest, as well as to those Who shall come after Him
till the end that hath no end. We recognize in the manifestation of each one of
them, whether outwardly or inwardly, the manifestation of none but God Himself,
if ye be of those that comprehend. Every one of them is a mirror of God,
reflecting naught else but His Self, His Beauty, His Might and Glory, if ye
will understand. All else besides them are to be regarded as mirrors capable of
reflecting the glory of these Manifestations Who are themselves the Primary
Mirrors of the Divine Being, if ye be not devoid of understanding. No one hath ever escaped them, neither are they to be
hindered from achieving their purpose. These Mirrors will everlastingly succeed
each other, and will continue to reflect the light of the Ancient of Days. They
that reflect their glory will, in like manner, continue to exist for evermore,
for the Grace of God can never cease from flowing. This is a truth that none
can disprove."
(Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, XXX)
"The door of the knowledge of the Ancient Being hath
ever been, and will continue for ever to be, closed in the face of men. No
man's understanding shall ever gain access unto His holy court. As a token of
His mercy, however, and as a proof of His loving-kindness, He hath manifested
unto men the Day Stars of His divine guidance, the Symbols of His divine unity,
and hath ordained the knowledge of these sanctified Beings to be identical with
the knowledge of His own Self. Whoso recognizeth
them hath recognized God. Whoso hearkeneth to their call, hath hearkened to the
Voice of God, and whoso testifieth to the truth of their Revelation, hath
testified to the truth of God Himself. Whoso turneth away from them, hath
turned away from God, and whoso disbelieveth in them, hath disbelieved in God.
Every one of them is the Way of God that connecteth this world with the realms
above, and the Standard of His Truth unto every one in the kingdoms of earth
and heaven. They are the Manifestations of God amidst men, the evidences of His
Truth, and the signs of His glory." (Bahá’u’lláh, GWB XXI)
Say:
Await ye till God will have changed His favor unto you. Nothing whatsoever escapeth Him. He knoweth the secrets both of the heavens
and of the earth. His knowledge embraceth all things. (Baha'u'llah, GWB,
LXVI)
"We
beseech God to aid thee to be just and fair-minded, and to acquaint thee
with the things that were hidden from the eyes of men. He, in truth, is the
Mighty, the Unconstrained. We ask thee to reflect upon that which hath been
revealed, and to be fair and just in thy speech, that perchance the splendors
of the daystar of truthfulness and sincerity may shine forth, and may deliver
thee from the darkness of ignorance, and illumine the world with the light of
knowledge. This Wronged One hath frequented no school, neither hath He attended
the controversies of the learned. By My life! Not of
Mine own volition have I revealed Myself, but God, of His own choosing, hath
manifested Me." (Bahá’u’lláh,
Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p. 10)
The Bearers of the Trust of God
are made manifest unto the peoples of the earth as the Exponents of a new Cause
and the Revealers of a new Message. Inasmuch as these Birds of the celestial
Throne are all sent down from the heaven of the Will of God, and as they all
arise to proclaim His irresistible Faith, they, therefore, are regarded as one
soul and the same person. For they all drink from the one Cup of the love of
God, and all partake of the fruit of the same Tree of Oneness.
These Manifestations of God
have each a twofold station. One is the station of pure abstraction and
essential unity. In this respect, if thou callest them all by one name, and
dost ascribe to them the same attributes, thou hast not erred from the truth.
Even as He hath revealed: "No distinction do We make between any
of His Messengers." For they, one and all, summon the people of
the earth to acknowledge the unity of God, and herald unto them the Kawthar of
an infinite grace and bounty. They are all invested with the robe of
prophethood, and are honored with the mantle of glory. Thus hath Muhammad, the
Point of the Qur'án, revealed: "I am all the Prophets." Likewise, He
saith: "I am the first Adam, Noah, Moses, and Jesus." Similar
statements have been made by Imam Ali. Sayings such as these, which indicate
the essential unity of those Exponents of Oneness, have also emanated from the
Channels of God's immortal utterance, and the Treasuries of the gems of Divine
knowledge, and have been recorded in the Scriptures. These Countenances are the
recipients of the Divine Command, and the Day Springs of His Revelation. This
Revelation is exalted above the veils of plurality and the exigencies of
number. Thus He saith: "Our Cause is but One." Inasmuch as the Cause
is one and the same, the Exponents thereof also must needs be one and the same.
Likewise, the Imams of the Muhammadan Faith, those lamps of certitude, have
said: "Muhammad is our first, Muhammad is our last, Muhammad our
all."
It is clear and evident to thee
that all the Prophets are the Temples of the Cause of God, Who have appeared
clothed in divers attire. If thou wilt observe with discriminating eyes, thou
wilt behold Them all abiding in the same tabernacle, soaring in the same
heaven, seated upon the same throne, uttering the same speech, and proclaiming
the same Faith. Such is the unity of those Essences of Being, those Luminaries
of infinite and immeasurable splendor! Wherefore, should one of these
Manifestations of Holiness proclaim saying: "I am the return of all the
Prophets," He, verily, speaketh the truth. In like manner, in every
subsequent Revelation, the return of the former Revelation is a fact, the truth
of which is firmly established....
The other station is the
station of distinction, and pertaineth to the world of creation, and to the
limitations thereof. In this respect, each Manifestation of God hath a distinct
individuality, a definitely prescribed mission, a predestined revelation, and
specially designated limitations. Each one of them is known by a different
name, is characterized by a special attribute, fulfils a definite mission, and
is entrusted with a particular Revelation. Even as He saith: "Some
of the Apostles We have caused to excel the others. To some God hath spoken,
some He hath raised and exalted. And to Jesus, Son of Mary, We gave manifest
signs, and We strengthened Him with the Holy Spirit." (Gleanings
from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, XXII)
“Now is the moment in which
to cleanse thyself with the waters of detachment that have flowed out from the
Supreme Pen, and to ponder, wholly for the sake of God, those things which,
time and again, have been sent down or manifested, and then to strive, as much
as lieth in thee, to quench, through the power of wisdom and the force of thy
utterance, the fire of enmity and hatred which smouldereth in the hearts of the
peoples of the world.
"The Divine Messengers
have been sent down, and their Books were revealed, for the purpose of
promoting the knowledge of God, and of furthering unity and fellowship amongst
men. But now behold, how they have made the Law of God a cause and pretext for
perversity and hatred. How pitiful, how regrettable, that most men are cleaving
fast to, and have busied themselves with, the things they possess, and are
unaware of, and shut out as by a veil from, the things God possesseth!” (Baha'u'llah, Epistle to the Son of the
Wolf, p. 11)
"Nay, all else besides
these Manifestations, live by the operation of Their Will, and move and have
their being through the outpourings of Their grace." (GWB XC)
